2002 Memorial Day Fair

For the 26th year, the South Salem Presbyterian Church sponsored the Memorial Day Fair on May 27th. What a success it was!

The fair opened with a series of races, all starting at the South Salem Library on Main Street. For those wanting a more moderate workout, there was also a 4.3-mile walk. Particpants received T-shirts provided by Andron, Cameron’s Deli, Echo Farm, The Horse and Hound Restaurant, Katonah Art and Frame Shop, Kelly Kochan, D.D.S., State Farm Insurance (Katonah office), The Salem Country Deli, The Stillman Family and The Yellow Monkey. Official numbers for all participants were provided by Lewisboro Physical Therapy. Water bottles and ribbons were given to all finishers, courtesy of Jeff Blutstein of Financial Logistics, LLC. Trophies were awarded to the top finishers in several classes. Race results for the 10-K and 5-K races are available here.

Pee Wee races for the younger set were a hit again this year. Everyone was a winner in these fun, non-competitive running races for the younger set.

Children received an official race T-shirt, a race number, and blue ribbon. The Pee Wee Races were sponsored by Blair’s Lawn Maintenance, C.W. Brown, Inc. General Contracting, Cross River Animal Hospital, Gossett Brothers Nursery, Katonah Art Center and Gallery, Ridgefield Art Center and Gallery, Kelly Kochan, D.D.S., Lewisboro Police Benevolent Association, Napoleon’s Antiques and Coffee House, South Salem Enrichment, Douglas Treyz, D.M.D, and the Zelem Pool Company.

A selection of all-American fair food was available -- hotdogs, hamburgers, ice cream, cotton candy, popcorn, coffee, and donuts were all consumed with abandon, and the bake sale had goodies from brownies to apple pie.

There's no question that the food tent was the "hot" place to be.

The parade assembled on the south end of Truesdale Lake and marched up Main Street past cheering crowds full of locals, cameras and video recorders in hand, eager to spot their special marchers. After passing by the church, the parade ended at the Town House, where a brief Memorial Day service was held.

The parade is led by a group of local dignitaries, including Pastor Nadine sporting the official race shirt.

On church grounds there were activities for the entire family. Games and activities for children included a 25-foot inflatable slide, a moon bounce and a new inflatable obstacle course.
