While the 27th South Salem Presbyterian Church Memorial Day Fair may have been one of the wettest on record, it was anything but a washout.

Races

Umbrellas, raincoats, and wet shoes were the order of the day, but the races (5K, 10K, PeeWee, and Health Walk) went on, with dedicated runners and walkers of all ages.

Waiting for the start of the 10-K

The fair opened with a series of races, all starting at the South Salem Library on Main Street. For those wanting a more moderate workout, there was also a 4.3K walk.

A wet start to the 10K race
Particpants received T-shirts sponsored by Blutstein Associates, Echo Farm, Houlihan-Lawrence Pound Ridge, Marshall Oil, Katonah Art & Frame, Kell Kochan DDS, Lewisboro Physical Therapy, The Yellow Monkey, Northeast Radiology-Brewster, Le Chateau, SSPC Bell Choir, and MC Energy Inc. Trophies were awarded to the top finishers in several classes.

Race results for the 10-K and 5-K races are available here.

Pee Wee Races a Hit

Despite the damp weather, the kids had a great time running their own special races, "where every runner is a winner".
Enjoying the race
Children ran in age groupings, with a progressively longer course as the ages increased. Most of the kids seemed to be enjoying the race, although a few of the smallest were unsure about running through the ribbon marking the finish line.

Children received an official race T-shirt, a race number, and blue ribbon. The Pee Wee Races were sponsored by Blair's Lawn Maintenance, Connacher Design, C.W. Brown, Inc. General Contracting, Cross River Animal Hospital, Gossett Brothers Nursery, Kelly Kochan, D.D.S., Lewisboro Police Benevolent Association, South Salem Enrichment, South Salem Nursery School, Douglas Treyz, D.M.D, The Yellow Armadillo, and the Jahn Family.

Food, Crafts, and Games

While the races got underway, vendors and volunteers at the church grounds were busy selling coffee and pastry, and setting up craft displays.

The bake sale crew still smiling
Much to the delight of everyone, the coffee "tent" and craft displays were relocated into the church building in deference to the weather. The bake sale crew stuck it out, keeping dry (mostly) under their tent in the middle of the front yard. Despite the dreary weather, the bake sale was a near sellout. Your webmaster can attest that the dampness didn't affect the baked goods at all!
Checking out the crafts

Meanwhile, kids games and crafts were organized upstairs, including bowling, beanbag toss, and face painting.

Plenty of activity in the "game room"
The sweet music rehearsed by the choir this week will be especially enhanced by the lingering scent of cotton candy, sold to many a happy kid in the choir room!

Silent Auction

Highlights of the silent auction included a Long Island Sound fishing trip with "Captain Bob", exercise equipment, a round of golf at Waccabuc Country Club, a piano, a brass bed, a portrait sitting, original art, antiques, collectibles and services. As always, bidders all anxiously hoped that noone else would spot "their" item before the bidding closed.
