AQUAFINA JOINS SPONSORS OF 10K & 5K MEMORIAL DAY RACES

Children Will Run in "PeeWee Races"
South Salem, NY - May 1, 2007 -- The growing popularity of the 10K and 5K races at the annual Memorial Day Fair in South Salem, which draws hundreds of runners from New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts, has attracted a major corporate sponsor. Aquafina, the number-one-selling bottled water in the U.S., produced by the Pepsi-Cola Company, will be the national sponsor of the races this year, Bill Whittemore, race chairman, announced today.
Pepsi will make a financial contribution to the South Salem Presbyterian Church which organizes the Fair each year and donate 40 cases of Aquafina and Pepsi soft drinks. "We're proud to have Pepsi as a partner in this event that has become a tradition of Memorial Day," Whittemore said. "This is the third time the company has supported our Fair. In two previous years Pepsi donated Aquafina for the runners and Pepsi soft drinks for sale by the Fair ."
Local race sponsors this year include State Farm Insurance, Marshall Oil Company, Houlihan Lawrence, MC Energy Inc. , Cross River Wine Merchant, CAPtech Inc. , Aer Yoga and Living, Lewisboro Physical Therapy and Douglas A. Treyz DMD
More than 350 runners competed in the 10K and 5K last year. They came from 33 town in three states. Michael Oliva of Harrison, NY won the 10K. Don Fleming of Pound Ridge, NY was the 5K winner. Runners are urged to arrive at the South Salem Library registration site 45 minutes prior to race time. Course maps are posted at www.southsalempc.org.
For a more leisurely pace, there is the 4.3K Health Walk around the picturesque Lake Truesdale. The 5K race will start at 9:00 am and the 10K race will start at 9:30 am. The Health Walk will start at 9:45 am. Registration tables will be open for business at the Library starting at 8:00 am. Representatives of Lewisboro Physical Therapy will lead runners in stretching exercises near the registration area before the races.
More than 30 church volunteers will help coordinate and supervise the races and health walk this year. The races will be timed by Super Race Systems which also handled the intermediate splits for the Boston and NYC Marathons. Times will be posted at noon at the wide side of the church. Trophies will be awarded at 12:30 pm for the first, second and third place winners of the 10K and 5K races, both male and female, in the following categories, under 15; 15-19;20-29;30-39;40-49;50-59;60-69; and 70 plus.
Running at the Memorial Day Fair isn't limited to adults and teenagers. The "PeeWee Races" for children 2 to 8 is another popular activity that awards ribbons to all who run the 25 to 100 yard sprints. The first 250 children to register for the races will receive a commemorative T-shirt.
Family Fun at the FairThe fair also offers a wide range of family activities. For children there is a petting zoo, a pet show, pony rides, craft activities and games, plus the popular Moon Bounce, giant inflatable slide and challenging obstacle course. Parents can explore dozens of gift booths where they can find hand-crafted jewelry, ceramics, casual fashions, antiques and fresh honey from the hive. The Silent Auction is another well attended attraction which offers unique treasures and bargains, from NY Mets tickets to a week's vacation in Vermont There's also an old-fashioned church bake sale where tasty home-made pies, cakes and cookies are sold.
The Fair is open from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Memorial Day. Last year more than 2,000 people visited the Fair which is held on church grounds along Spring Street in South Salem. Parking is available at the "Visiting Parking" lot behind the Fire House on Spring Street where a shuttle bus will take visitors to the Fair.
Registration forms for the 10K and 5K runs, Health Walk, PeeWee races and Children's Pet Show may be obtained from the website www.southsalempc.org. First 300 registrants will receive an official race T-shirt designed by artist Sally Whitin. Advance registration fee for the 10K, 5K is $20, $25 on race day.
Group discount ( minimum of 4 runners) is $18 per runner. Registration for the Health Walk is $10, $15 on race day. Entry fee for the PeeWee Races for children 2 to 8 years old is $10 per child. The first 250 will each receive a free PeeWee T-shirt. All pets must register for the Children's Pet Show. Entry fee is $3.
