The Custodial Coconut HeadTraditions at our church begin in the most interesting ways. This carved coconut head was the subject of a spirited bidding activity between church members at the 2003 Silent Auction. Stories of childhood memories, families visiting the World's Fair, and frightening recollections of a a similar coconut owned by a member of our congregation ... all made for a nostalgic and action packed bidding experience. As is the case with any auction, one person emerges as the winner. After reflecting on the experience of owning the coconut head for one year, this SSPC church member concluded that the coconut represented an opportunity, much like those that we encounter in our church lives. The idea was to share in the custody of this special article, but only for a short time. And so it is the hope that a new tradition begins here ... and this coconut will remain in the custody & care of members of the SSPC congregation and friends of the community until the next year's Memorial Day Silent Auction. At that time, another person might find the opportunity for custody as compelling and rewarding as others have. Each custodian has signed the coconut, and although it's somewhat camera shy, some blurry photos are rumored to exist recording its journey through the lives of our community. |
