Family, friends, colleagues, and church officials were gathered to participate in this ancient ritual of the church. Just before the service began, my minister father gave me a gift. He handed me one of his well used preaching robes - which he had carefully redesigned to fit a 25 year old woman. Yes, in that moment, Dad passed on the mantle to me - laying upon me not only the well-worn fabric of office - but also the blessings and responsibilities of a family tradition and a spiritual value. To savor the simple charm of a small town parade -- the gleaming fire trucks, beaming Brownies and cub scouts (always one with his shirt tails hanging out) marching proudly down Main Street waving flags. Races, a pet show, and enough hamburgers, hot dogs and ice cream to feed the entire town complete the picture. For the 32nd year, the South Salem Presbyterian Church is sponsoring The Memorial Day Fair on May 26th from 9:00 until 3:00. The fair opens with a series of races, all starting at the South Salem Library on Main Street with registration starting at 8:00 a.m. The 5K starts at 9:00 a.m., a 10K at 9:30. For those wanting a more moderate workout, there will be a 4.3-mile walk beginning at 9:45. Peewee races will begin after the others finish.
