LOWER SALEM?
The South Salem Presbyterian Church has been in continuous operation since 1752. Our deed acknowledges King George II of Britain since we were not a nation at the time of the purchase of the land.

South Salem was not a part of New York State at that time. It wasn’t until our territory was traded for Greenwich that South Salem became a part of New York. The hamlet was known in those days as Lower Salem.

We thought it would be a great teaching moment to call the race “Lower Salem Turkey Trot” in honor of this history.
HISTORICAL CELEBRATION

LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF SOUTH SALEM AND SSPC

Following the trot stay for a bit and enjoy learning more about our town and “the while church on the hill.”  The historical celebration will include guided tours of the cemetery (on the New York State Register of Historic Places), hear about the fire that destroyed the Church as well as period reenactments. Additionally, a number of documents and photos from the archives will be on display, including Reverend Solomon Mead’s sermons, early baptismal, marriage and death certificates.Details
